Renowned sarangi virtuoso and Hindustani classical musician Pandit Ram Narayan passed away on November 9 at the age of 96. Hailed as one of the greatest sarangi players of his generation, Narayan’s contributions transformed the traditional Indian instrument from a folk accompanist into a celebrated solo concert instrument on the world stage.
Narayan was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, among other honors, in recognition of his extraordinary talent and influence.
Narayan’s pioneering work breathed new life into the sarangi, which had nearly faded from prominence in classical music circles. His performances, marked by deep emotional expression and technical brilliance, earned him international acclaim and inspired a new generation of musicians. He is survived by his four children, including Aruna Narayan, also a sarangi player, and Brij Narayan, a sarod artist.
The Governor of Maharashtra, CP Radhakrishnan, paid tribute on social media, saying, “Deeply saddened to know about the demise of internationally acclaimed Sarangi maestro Pt Ram Narayan Ji. Pt Ram Narayan took Sarangi to global heights through his masterly performances. The sound of his Sarangi touched hearts and heavens.”

Born in 1927 in Amber, a village near Udaipur, Narayan hailed from a family of court musicians and was drawn to the sarangi at a young age. Under his father’s guidance, he mastered the instrument, overcoming both its technical challenges and its historical association as an accompaniment for courtesans. Determined to elevate the sarangi’s status, he took it to new heights as a solo instrument, captivating audiences worldwide with performances at prestigious venues like Royal Albert Hall and BBC Proms.
