Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, has died at the age of 68 following a prolonged illness, his former boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys confirmed on Saturday, August 8.
He died in a clinic in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, where he had been receiving treatment.
Newell’s Old Boys described Jorge as a lifelong supporter of the club and a key figure in Lionel Messi’s career. The club said his guidance and support were instrumental from Messi’s early days in Argentina through his rise to global football prominence.
Jorge also worked as his son’s agent and was involved in major career decisions, including Messi’s moves to Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.
Concerns over Jorge’s health emerged during the 2026 World Cup after Messi became emotional during Argentina’s match against Algeria. Messi later confirmed his emotions were linked to an off-field matter, while his family denied reports of Jorge’s death and said he was recovering.
Jorge remained with Messi after the family moved to Spain when Barcelona signed the youngster at 13, supporting him through the early stages of his career.
Newell’s Old Boys, Barcelona and the Argentine Football Association expressed condolences to the Messi family, including his mother Celia Cuccittini and siblings Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol.
