Mumbai: Relentless monsoon rains in Maharashtra have claimed at least 13 lives after landslides, house collapses and flooding hit Mumbai and Pune, while also paralysing key transport routes.
In Pune’s Maval tehsil, a major landslide struck Patan village around 4:25 am on Monday, burying around five houses and trapping nearly 30–35 people.
Three members of a family- Nandu Tikone (60), Mauli Tikone (30) and Anita Tikone (55) died. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams recovered bodies while search operations continue for those still trapped.
Officials said three landslides occurred in the village following heavy rainfall.
The landslide also dumped nearly 100 tonnes of debris on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, halting traffic on both the expressway and the old highway.
Authorities have removed about 70% of the debris and partially restored one lane, with full restoration expected soon.
Mumbai remained under a red alert as heavy rain, strong winds and high tides disrupted normal life. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) warned of extremely heavy rainfall, while rail services were affected due to waterlogging.
Two deaths were reported in tree-fall incidents, and six people died in a chawl collapse in Mankhurd, pushing the rain-related toll in the city to eight.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel as IMD continues to forecast intense rainfall across the region.
