Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu is likely to embark on an official visit to India soon. Heena Waleed, the chief spokesperson for the President’s Office, confirmed that while the exact date is yet to be determined, discussions are underway to find a mutually convenient time for the leaders of both countries.
This announcement comes at a time when two junior ministers in President Muizzu’s government have resigned. The ministers had been suspended earlier this year for making derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Muizzu’s upcoming visit follows efforts by both nations to strengthen diplomatic relations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had visited the Maldives in August. Jaishankar’s visit, which took place from August 9 to 11, marked a renewed push from New Delhi to bolster its ties with Male after a period of strained relations.
President Muizzu had previously traveled to New Delhi on June 9 to attend Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. Following the trip, Muizzu described it as a “success” for both the Maldives and the broader region, emphasizing the positive outcomes of his discussions with Indian leadership.
