Indian shooter Manu Bhaker, who made history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by clinching two bronze medals, has found herself at the center of an unexpected controversy. Once hailed as a national hero, she is now facing criticism from online trolls for carrying her medals to public events and being seen as ‘flaunting’ them.
Manu, considered India’s top medal prospect in shooting, exceeded expectations by winning bronze in both the women’s 10m air pistol and mixed team event. Fans and media alike celebrated her stellar performance in Paris, recognizing her as one of the standout performers of India’s six-medal haul.
However, less than two months after her triumph, some internet users have shifted their tone, mocking Manu for what they perceive as her ‘obsession’ with her Olympic success. Trolls have created memes and gifs poking fun at her for frequently displaying her medals during public appearances and felicitation events.
Responding to the criticism, Manu took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday to address the backlash. She wrote, “The two bronze medals I won at the Paris 2024 Olympics belong to India. Whenever I am invited for any event and asked to show these medals, I do it with pride. This is my way of sharing my beautiful journey.”
