China’s groundbreaking AI model, DeepSeek, has made a huge impact on the tech industry, surpassing well-known AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude AI. The chatbot quickly climbed to the top of the Apple App Store, overtaking ChatGPT, and created a stir in the US stock market. Its rapid success is largely due to the innovative team of young engineers behind it, who have developed advanced AI technology despite having limited resources.
A key figure in this success is Luo Fuli, a 29-year-old AI researcher and prodigy from China. Known for her groundbreaking work in natural language processing (NLP), Luo has gained widespread recognition for her contributions to the field.
Luo’s career began at Beijing Normal University, where she initially faced difficulties in computer science but eventually excelled. She later joined Peking University’s Institute of Computational Linguistics, where she published eight papers at the esteemed ACL conference in 2019.
This achievement caught the attention of major tech companies like Alibaba and Xiaomi, which led to fruitful collaborations. While at Alibaba’s DAMO Academy, Luo led the development of the multilingual pre-training model VECO and contributed significantly to the open-source AliceMind project.
