New Delhi: The valiant men and women in uniform serve as the bedrock of our security, ensuring that we rest peacefully under the shelter of our homes while they vigilantly stand guard at the borders, shielding us from threats and adversaries. In their selfless dedication to protecting the nation, many military personnel make the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives in service.
National Memorial Day stands as a tribute to the lives and valor of these courageous individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.
Originally known as Decoration Day, National Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It traces its roots back to the aftermath of the Civil War, when grieving women initiated the tradition of adorning the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Three years after the war’s end, on May 5, 1868, Major General John A. Logan, leader of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veterans’ organisation, proclaimed the establishment of an annual day to honor the memory of those who had perished in battle. May 30 was chosen as Decoration Day, a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with floral tributes.
This occasion is marked by the solemn ritual of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, and in some instances, adorning them with the Stars and Stripes, symbolizing the valor and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in defense of the nation. Additionally, National Memorial Day often heralds the unofficial onset of the summer season in the United States.
Several cities across the country, including New York, Chicago, and Washington D.C., hold parades in remembrance of the fallen heroes. These parades typically feature participation from military personnel and veteran organizations, serving as poignant reminders of the lives lost in service to their country.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May each year, serves as a solemn commemoration of all those soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. Originally conceived as Decoration Day to honor the fallen of the Civil War, its scope expanded during World War I to include all those who have died in conflict. The date of Memorial Day was shifted from May 30 to the last Monday in May with the enactment of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.
