This is egg-actly not the Easter celebrations people in the US hoped for. The prices of eggs have skyrocketed.
According to media reports, the cost of a dozen eggs in the US hit a record $6.23 last month—almost double the long-term average. In cities like New York and New Jersey, shoppers pay as much as $1 per egg. For many households, it’s no longer a case of a dozen eggs, but of whether any can be afforded at all.
The surge in the price is due to many factors – inflation, lingering supply chain issues, and a devastating bout of bird flu.
So, how do people tend to celebrate Easter this weekend?Â
The idea of colouring potatoes or rocks first emerged after a 2023 price spike, and it is now making a resurgence.
Instagram and TikTok users have turned to dyeing marshmallows as a replacement for the family-favourite Easter fun.
Now, Jet-Puffed is offering an all-in-one kit for a one-stop marshmallow-decorating shop. The Kraft Heinz-owned brand has released a kit complete with the works: tongs, food colouring, fine-tipped decorating tools and, of course, a bag of “farm fresh” egg-sized marshmallows to use them on.
The kit can only be purchased at Walmart.com. At $1.99, it is less than a third of the average price of a carton of eggs.
In March, the average price for a dozen Grade A large eggs rose to $6.23 — a record high, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, at just under $2, the marshmallow-decorating kit was roughly the cost of the same dozen in January 2022, before egg prices began steadily increasing (and later spiking).
Some users have cracked an alternative plan to celebrate the festival. There is has been a suggestion to use foil eggs.
What are those, you may ask?
Cut egg shapes out of cardboard, wrap them in foil, and you have shiny eggs to decorate and reuse.
Then a video circulating shows a mom filling cupcake tins with dye. Her child then skewered marshmallows with toothpicks before gently lowering them into the dye and proudly displaying the creations on a glass platter.
Here are some fine egg-amples to celebarte Easter, this weekend!
