‘Over 25% Of Google Software Is Written By AI’: Sundar Pichai

Date:

In a significant shift for the tech industry, Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced during the company’s Q3 2024 earnings call that over 25% of Google’s new code is now generated by artificial intelligence, with human engineers reviewing and refining it.

For software engineers and coders, the news may prompt both excitement and introspection. Although AI’s role in coding is expanding, it doesn’t necessarily spell an end for traditional coders. Instead, it opens new pathways for engineers to focus on more complex problem-solving and creative tasks, leveraging AI to handle more routine code generation.

This shift, however, will likely reduce the demand for some entry-level roles, as automation becomes more capable of taking on repetitive tasks. In response, engineers may need to adapt by developing skills in overseeing and optimizing AI-generated code.

Pichai emphasized the ambitious vision behind Google’s AI integration, stating in a blog post following the call that the use of AI in coding helps Google achieve faster innovation cycles and reduces development timelines. This strategic push is part of Google’s larger mission to embed AI across its operations, from accelerating internal development to improving products with sophisticated AI capabilities.

In a blog post Pichai wrote, “More than a quarter of all new code at Google is generated by AI.”

A notable advancement is the integration of Google’s AI model, Gemini, into GitHub Copilot, giving developers worldwide access to Google’s AI-driven tools. This rollout marks a milestone in Google’s broader AI strategy, making it easier for developers to collaborate with AI in real time. Additionally, Google has recently unified its research, machine learning, security, and platform teams to further streamline development and accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge AI models like Gemini.

Beyond code generation, Google is advancing AI-driven tools for content creation. Google DeepMind’s video AI model, Veo, is set to launch on YouTube Shorts later this year, bringing generative video tools to creators and expanding Google’s AI impact on digital media.
