Hospitality giant OYO has announced a new check-in policy for its partner hotels, starting in Meerut, that prohibits unmarried couples from checking in. Under this revised policy, all couples will be required to present valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in, even for online bookings. The company stated that partner hotels will have the discretion to decline bookings based on their judgment and local cultural norms.
According to OYO, the decision stems from feedback received from civil society groups and local residents, particularly in Meerut, urging the company to restrict unmarried couple bookings. Similar demands have reportedly emerged from residents in other cities, suggesting that the policy may eventually be implemented on a broader scale.
In a statement, OYO clarified that the move is part of a larger effort to redefine its brand as a trusted provider of safe and family-friendly hospitality experiences. The company aims to cater to families, students, business professionals, religious travelers, and solo tourists while encouraging longer stays and repeat bookings.
