The ship, MV Gautam, carrying six Indian nationals and one Indonesian, was travelling from Oman to India when it suffered a total power failure on May 3 due to a generator malfunction. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai alerted Pakistani authorities, prompting Islamabad to initiate a rescue operation.
The Pakistan Navy deployed PMSS Kashmir, along with support from the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), to aid the crew. Emergency assistance, including food, medical aid and technical support, was provided to stabilise the vessel and ensure the safety of those on board.
Indian authorities said the vessel initially drifted within Pakistan’s Search and Rescue Region before moving towards Indian waters. Communication with the ship was limited, with only battery-backed systems functioning.
PMSA personnel boarded the vessel and later confirmed that the main generator was beyond repair. The Indian Coast Guard has requested arrangements for a tug to tow the vessel, which remains without propulsion and poses a navigational hazard.
Video footage of the rescue operation has surfaced online. Last month, Pakistan reported rescuing 18 crew members from another vessel in the northern Arabian Sea after a distress call.
