The passports of eight Non-Resident Indian husbands have been cancelled on the grounds of abandoning their wives and disappearing, as reported by an official on Thursday from the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
A joint committee had been formed by the WCD, Ministry of External Affairs, and Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the cases of NRI husbands leaving their wives and absconding.
It was found that over the last couple of months, the committee had received around seventy complaints and to take an action against this crime, the passports of eight NRI husbands have been cancelled and search notices have been issued in their names.
Additionally, an online website has been launched where NRI marriages need to be registered, however, the operation date is yet to be figured out.
Maneka Gandhi, the minister of Women and Child Development has requested the states to ask their respective marriage registrars report such marriages to the ministry at the earliest in order to make the portal functional as soon as possible.
Earlier the ministry has passed an order that all the NRI marriages need to be registered within a maximum period of seven days, and if they are not reported within the stipulated time limit, the passports and visas of the residents and others involved would be withheld.
