Perplexity has launched a new AI-enabled web browser called Comet, aiming to change how people search and interact with information online. The browser comes with Perplexity’s own AI search engine built in, offering direct answers and summaries instead of long lists of links.
Comet enters a crowded field of web browsers led by Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari. It also follows similar efforts by The Browser Company, which recently launched its AI-based browser, Dia. OpenAI has also hinted at plans to enter the browser space.
Built on Chromium, the same open-source framework used by Chrome, Comet supports Chrome extensions and allows users to transfer their bookmarks. This makes it easier for people to switch browsers without major changes in their experience. Chromium’s compatibility with most websites also helps avoid loading issues.
A key feature of Comet is the Comet Assistant, a digital tool that helps users carry out everyday tasks. It can summarise emails, manage tabs, and help users interact with websites more efficiently. With this release, Perplexity is positioning Comet as a new way to navigate the internet, focused on helping users find what they need faster and with fewer steps.
