Bratislava: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bratislava on Sunday for a two-day visit to Slovakia, becoming the first Indian prime minister to visit the country since its independence in 1993.
The visit marks the second leg of his three-nation European tour and is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in key sectors.
Modi was welcomed by Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár and received a traditional bread-and-salt greeting, a symbol of hospitality and respect in Slovak culture. Members of the Indian diaspora also gathered to welcome him.
During the visit, Modi will hold talks with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico, focusing on trade, investment, automobile and railway manufacturing, and emerging technologies. He is also scheduled to meet leading Slovak business executives to explore new economic opportunities.
Calling the trip a chance to deepen India-Slovakia relations, Modi said discussions with Slovak leaders would help open new avenues of cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the visit builds on recent high-level exchanges, including President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to Slovakia in April 2025 and Pellegrini’s visit to India for the AI Impact Summit in February 2026.
The visit is also expected to strengthen India’s engagement with the European Union. After Slovakia, Modi will attend the G7 Summit in Evian on June 16-17 and later participate in VivaTech 2026 in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.
