Two prominent Minnesota lawmakers were shot in their homes early Saturday in what authorities have described as a “politically motivated” attack, sending shockwaves through the state’s political circles and prompting a full-scale manhunt.
Governor Tim Walz confirmed the tragic death of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in one of the two targeted shootings. In a separate incident, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot, with Hoffman reportedly wounded but alive.
Both shootings took place in separate homes located in legislative districts north of Minneapolis. Early investigations suggest the assailant may have impersonated a law enforcement officer to gain entry into the homes. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity, but they are pursuing multiple leads in what is being described as a complex and deeply troubling investigation.
Melissa Hortman, a seasoned Democrat first elected to the Minnesota House in 2004, had recently assumed a leadership role in the Legislature. A lawyer by profession, she served as House Speaker from 2019 to 2023 and was widely respected for her legislative acumen. She is survived by her two children.
State Senator John Hoffman, a Democrat and longtime public servant, was first elected to the Senate in 2012. A consultant by trade and a former vice chair of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board, Hoffman had built a reputation as a dedicated advocate for education and disability rights.
The violent attacks have stunned Minnesota’s political community and reignited concerns about the safety of public officials, who face growing threats amid a polarized political climate.
