Boston: Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, arrived at Boston Logan International Airport on Saturday (local time) as part of his multi-day visit to the United States.
Gandhi is scheduled to visit Brown University in Rhode Island, where he will engage with faculty members and students across two days — April 21 and 22. He is also expected to hold interactions with members of the Indian diaspora, including office bearers of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC).
Confirming the visit earlier, Congress leader Pawan Khera posted on X: “Former Congress President Mr. Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Brown University in Rhode Island, United States, on the 21st and 22nd of April. He will give a talk and interact with faculty members and students.”
This marks Gandhi’s second trip to the U.S. in recent months. In September 2024, he embarked on a three-day tour, which included stops in Dallas and Washington, D.C. In Dallas, the Wayanad MP met students and faculty at the University of Texas and later addressed members of the Indian community. He also visited Georgetown University in the U.S. capital — his first overseas engagement since taking over as the Leader of Opposition in the Indian Parliament.
His remarks during that visit triggered a political storm back home. Gandhi had then criticized the reservation system in its current form and called for a nationwide caste census. “When we talk about the capture of institutions, businesses, and the media, the elephant in the room is that 90 percent of India — OBCs, Dalits, Adivasis — aren’t even part of the game,” he said at the time, referring to systemic underrepresentation.
Gandhi’s latest visit comes amid heightened political activity in India, as debates around social justice, representation, and caste data continue to take center stage.
