New Delhi: Rain and hail hit parts of Delhi and surrounding NCR areas on Thursday afternoon, bringing sudden relief from intense heat after several days of scorching temperatures. Strong winds accompanied the showers, leading to a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures across affected localities.

Dark clouds formed rapidly, with rain and hail reported near the Delhi-Noida border. The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Delhi and an orange alert for Noida and Ghaziabad, forecasting thunderstorms and heavy rain during the evening hours.
Meteorologists said the weather shift was triggered by interaction between dry westerly winds and moist easterlies, causing strong convective activity and thunderstorm formation.
The system is expected to impact 20–30% of Delhi-NCR, 30–40% of Haryana, and up to 50% of western Uttar Pradesh, with uneven rainfall distribution and possible hailstorms. Officials warned of localised waterlogging and advised residents to avoid open areas during lightning activity.
The region had recently endured temperatures near 44°C and heatwave-like conditions in late April. However, multiple western disturbances and intermittent rainfall, including showers on April 29, have provided temporary cooling and improved air quality.
While the current rain brings relief, officials cautioned that convective weather may continue in coming days across northwest India, urging residents to stay updated on weather alerts.
