The much-anticipated third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Gabba got off to a frustrating start as relentless rain allowed just 12.1 overs of play on the opening day before the umpires called it off. Australia ended Day 1 on 28/0, with Usman Khawaja (19*) and Nathan McSweeney (4*) unbeaten at the crease.
Under gloomy skies, India decided to bowl after winning the toss, hoping to make use of the overcast conditions. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj opened the bowling on a surface that offered a light covering of grass but little assistance in terms of swing or seam. Khawaja, showing confidence from the outset, punished anything off-line, while McSweeney played a cautious supporting role.
Debutant Akash Deep, brought in as one of two changes alongside Ravindra Jadeja, finally got his chance to bowl after the first rain delay. The young seamer impressed with his fuller lengths and managed to generate some swing, briefly troubling the batters. But just as India’s bowlers seemed to settle into a groove, rain interrupted play again.
With the weather refusing to relent, the lunch break was taken early, and the entire second session was lost to the downpour. Despite the ground staff’s best efforts, the rain persisted through the afternoon, and play was eventually abandoned at 4:15 PM local time.
The washed-out opening day sets the stage for a challenging remainder of the Test, with all four days now scheduled to feature extended sessions to make up for lost time.
