Mumbai: Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) of his availability for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy to maintain match fitness and ODI form. However, there remains uncertainty over Virat Kohli’s participation in the domestic 50-over tournament.
According to reports, the board has made it clear that domestic performances and match readiness will play a significant role in future ODI selections. Acting on that directive, Rohit has committed to leading Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26 season.
Since both Rohit and Kohli have retired from Tests and T20Is, the BCCI wants them to stay in rhythm by playing competitive domestic fixtures before major international assignments.
If he takes part, Rohit will be available for the entire group stage from December 24 to January 8, before returning to the Indian side for the home ODI series against New Zealand, beginning on January 11. The last time Rohit featured in India’s premier 50-over domestic competition was back in October 2018.
Meanwhile, there is no official confirmation yet on whether Virat Kohli will turn out for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The BCCI, however, is keen for both icons to participate in domestic cricket to ensure they remain match-fit and in touch with competitive cricket ahead of India’s crucial ODI assignments.
With the India vs South Africa ODI series scheduled from November 30 to December 6, fans won’t have to wait long to see the veteran duo back in blue, though their road to that point may run through domestic cricket first.
