New Chandigarh: Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 powered West Indies to a sensational five-wicket victory over India in the third ODI on Saturday, as the visitors chased down 352 in 48.2 overs.
The win was West Indies’ first ODI victory over India since 2023 and ended India’s hopes of a series sweep after the hosts had won the first two matches.
Hope, who kept wickets for all 50 overs, then opened the chase and batted through 48.2 overs despite carrying a niggle. His knock became the highest individual ODI score by a West Indies batter against India, surpassing Desmond Haynes’ 152 not out in 1989.
The chase was also West Indies’ highest successful ODI run chase, eclipsing their previous best of 331/5 against Ireland in 2019.
Earlier, India recovered from 4/2 after Jayden Seales dismissed Shubman Gill for 1 and Virat Kohli for a golden duck. Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad added 137 runs, with Rohit scoring 92 off 85 and Gaikwad 57 off 69.
KL Rahul then anchored India’s innings before launching a late assault.
Despite being dropped twice, Rahul smashed an unbeaten career-best 129 off 87 balls, including 10 fours and two sixes. India scored 105 runs in the final 10 overs to finish on 351/7.
