Sikkimese filmmaker Tribeny Geeta Rai has made a remarkable international debut with her film Shape of Momo, which earned two major honours at the recently concluded Busan International Film Festival.
The film, made in Nepali, explores the complex realities of women navigating tradition, independence, and identity in a changing world.
Rai’s Shape of Momo received both the Taipei Film Commission Award and the Songwon Vision Award in BIFF’s Vision Section. “Busan gave credibility to our work. It is special for a film from Sikkim, in Nepali, to be seen at such a platform. It gave visibility and connected us with audiences who share cultural similarities in Asia.
Rai’s success not only highlights her talent but also brings the voices of Northeast India to a global audience. With Shape of Momo, she has opened a new chapter for regional storytelling, one filled with authenticity, emotion, and quiet strength.
