Ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines on Saturday announced it is ceasing operations with immediate effect, citing mounting financial difficulties and a sharp rise in fuel costs linked to tensions in West Asia.
In a statement, the airline said it has begun an “orderly wind-down” of operations, cancelling all flights and shutting down customer service.
“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations… all flights have been cancelled,” the company said.
The sudden shutdown has sent shockwaves across the US aviation sector, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and disrupting travel plans nationwide. Known for its no-frills, budget-friendly fares, Spirit had been a key player in the low-cost airline segment for over three decades.
The airline had been grappling with severe financial stress, including its second bankruptcy filing in recent years, even before rising jet fuel prices further strained its operations. Efforts to secure a last-minute rescue package reportedly failed after key creditors rejected a proposal.
According to reports, Spirit plans to issue refunds to affected passengers and has advised them to make alternate travel arrangements with other carriers.
The closure is expected to have a major employment impact, with around 17,000 jobs at risk, including employees and contract workers linked to the airline.
