The teaser, shared on Netflix’s social media platforms, picks up from where season one ended, with Gi-hun abandoning his plans to go to the U.S. and instead confronting a mysterious masked figure while brandishing a gun. The thrill is a notch higher this time as the teaser introduces a new batch of contestants preparing to face yet another round of twisted, life-or-death games. A haunting voiceover in Korean warns, “We’re ready to start the game.”
Set on a three years later plot, after Gi-hun’s harrowing victory, the storyline follows his return to the deadly competition, driven by a burning desire for revenge. Instead of escaping, Gi-hun reenters the nightmare, joining a new group of players fighting for an astonishing prize of 45.6 billion won.
Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has teased Gi-hun’s transformation in this season, revealing to Deadline that he will be more hardened, focused on seeking revenge with renewed determination.
Since its debut, Squid Game has been a global phenomenon. Season one shattered records, amassing a staggering 1.65 billion views in its first 28 days, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series ever, according to Deadline. Lee Jung-jae’s performance earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, marking the first time an Asian actor won the award for a non-English show. Hwang Dong-hyuk also made history, becoming the first Asian director to win an Emmy for directing a non-English series.
In a heartfelt letter announcing the second season, Hwang reflected on the incredible journey since the first season aired. “It’s been nearly three years since season one took the world by storm. So much has changed since then,” he wrote. Expressing his excitement about returning to the world of Squid Game, Hwang hinted at a bigger and even more intense season, with Gi-hun’s thirst for revenge playing a pivotal role.
“Seong Gi-hun is back and out for revenge, but will he succeed? The Front Man won’t be an easy opponent,” Hwang teased. He also alluded to a major conflict that will lead into an epic conclusion in the third season, slated for release in 2025.
Fans can expect familiar faces returning to the deadly game, including Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. The new season will also introduce a slew of fresh talent to the show, including Yim Si-wan (The Attorney), Kang Ha-neul (Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet), and Park Gyu-young (Attack the Gas Station), among others.
Produced by Firstman Studio and executive produced by Kim Ji-yeon, Squid Game Season 2 is set to premiere on December 26, 2024, with promises of another heart-pounding chapter in the dark and twisted saga.
