Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has opened the door to a possible sequel of his 2011 sci-fi venture Ra.One, more than a decade after its release. Speaking during a special fan interaction on his 60th birthday, the actor reflected on the film’s legacy, challenges, and the idea of revisiting it with today’s technology.
Looking back, Shah Rukh described Ra.One as a project born from “passion and curiosity,” aimed at pushing the boundaries of Indian cinema. “It was a new kind of film, very close to my heart,” he said. “Anubhav [Sinha] made it with great effort. I wanted it to inspire others — to encourage more superhero and VFX-driven films in India. I thought Ra.One would start a new trend, but it didn’t quite happen that way.”
The actor noted that while the film may have been ahead of its time, it still found appreciation among audiences. “Maybe people would relate to it more today,” he said. “Back then, concepts like PlayStations and iPads weren’t as common. Now, with how far technology has come, the story might connect better.”
When asked about the possibility of a sequel, Shah Rukh smiled and didn’t rule it out. “If Anubhav decides, maybe one day we’ll do it. He worked really hard on it, and I believe only he can make it. It would be easier now — though I still remember losing eight kilos wearing that costume,” he joked.
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Ra.One also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Arjun Rampal. The film followed the story of a video game developer whose creation, a virtual villain, escapes into the real world, blurring the line between technology and humanity.
Produced by Gauri Khan under Red Chillies Entertainment and released during Diwali in 2011, Ra.One was one of the most ambitious projects of its time, boasting cutting-edge visual effects and a massive production scale. However, despite the hype, the film underperformed at the box office.
