Amidst the ongoing unrest, Bangladesh’s newly appointed Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, has called for an immediate end to the violence that has erupted across the country.
Yunus, a Nobel laureate and globally recognized advocate for social change, has stepped as the head of an interim government during a critical juncture in Bangladesh’s history. His appointment followed a series of intense protests led by student groups, which ultimately forced Hasina from power.
Yunus delivered a stern message to the student leaders who have been at the forefront of the uprising. He warned that continued violence, especially against minorities, would compel him to resign from his newly assumed position.
“If you trust me to lead your country, the first step is to cease all attacks on people, especially minorities. Without this, my efforts are futile, and it would be better if I stepped aside,” said Yunus.
In his first official statement, Yunus praised the courage of the students who led the protests, likening the resignation of Sheikh Hasina to a momentous victory, on par with Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. He referred to this moment as “our second Victory Day.” However, Yunus also issued a cautionary note, urging all citizens to refrain from further violence and to seize this opportunity for national renewal.
At 84, Yunus was formally sworn in as head of an interim government by President Mohammed Shahabuddin during a ceremony at the Bangabhaban presidential palace. In this role, Yunus will lead a 16-member interim Cabinet, which includes prominent figures from civil society as well as two student protest leaders.
The current crisis began on August 5, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina abruptly resigned and fled to India, leaving a void in the country’s leadership. The military quickly intervened, establishing an interim government under Yunus’s leadership to manage the transition.
