A civilian who intervened during a shooting near Sydney’s Bondi Beach has drawn widespread praise after a fundraiser set up in his support crossed the $1 million mark.
The incident occurred on December 14, 2025, during a Hanukkah event, “Chanukah by the Sea,” at Archer Park near Bondi Beach, which was attended by hundreds of people.

According to reports, gunshots were fired from an elevated footbridge, triggering panic as people fled the area. Police said two attackers — identified as father and son Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram — opened fire using multiple weapons.
Amid the chaos, Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner who was nearby, acted swiftly. Witnesses said Ahmed approached one of the gunmen from behind, placed him in a chokehold, disarmed him and forced him to retreat, helping prevent further injuries.
Ahmed was injured during the confrontation and sustained two gunshot wounds to his leg. He was taken to hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
A video of the incident has since gone viral, drawing praise from political leaders and members of the public around the world. A GoFundMe campaign launched in Ahmed’s support has raised more than $1.2 million, reflecting widespread recognition of his bravery.
