Thailand has announced plans to reduce the visa-free stay period for tourists from 93 countries from 60 days to 30 days in an effort to curb criminal activities and misuse of long-term stays.
Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaeow said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will submit the proposal to the Cabinet for approval. However, no timeline has been given for its implementation.
Thailand introduced the 60-day visa-free policy for citizens of 93 countries in July 2024 to boost tourism. Authorities will now also tighten checks on other visa categories to ensure foreign nationals comply with the purpose of their visas.
The move comes amid concerns over some tourists allegedly using extended visa-free stays for illegal activities and violating immigration rules.
Tourism remains a major pillar of Thailand’s economy, with international arrivals reaching nearly 40 million in 2019 before the pandemic. However, the country has seen a slight decline in visitor numbers this year.
According to official figures, Thailand recorded 12.4 million foreign tourist arrivals between January 1 and May 10, 2026, marking a 3.43% drop compared to the same period last year.
The proposed policy change is expected to balance tourism growth with stricter immigration monitoring and security measures.
