Washington DC: US President Donald Trump said the United States has called off a planned large-scale military strike on Iran, claiming that the “perimeters of a deal” have been agreed upon.
In a post on Truth Social late Saturday, Trump said the decision followed requests from Iran and other Middle East countries to delay the attack. He added that the agreement must be finalised quickly.
Trump also said the deal would lead to the “Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT” and end what he described as “Iran’s nuclear threat”.
There was no immediate response from Tehran. Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told his Saudi counterpart that any US or Israeli attack would receive a “proportionate response”.
According to Axios, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump to cancel the planned strikes and return to negotiations.
Meanwhile, the US Department of State issued security alerts for Americans in 10 countries across the region, advising them to exercise increased caution and consider leaving because of rising tensions.
