Washington: Taiwan is expected to feature prominently in discussions between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during Trump’s scheduled visit to Beijing on May 14-15, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Speaking at a White House press briefing, Rubio said Taiwan is “always” part of conversations between Washington and Beijing and stressed that both sides have a shared interest in avoiding instability.
He said the United States does not want any destabilising developments involving Taiwan or across the Indo-Pacific region.
The upcoming meeting comes amid heightened tensions over Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. Beijing has increased military activity around the island in recent years, raising concerns in Washington and among regional allies.
The United States remains Taiwan’s primary arms supplier and one of its most significant international partners, a position that has repeatedly drawn criticism from Beijing.
Rubio said maintaining regional stability remains a common priority, underscoring the sensitivity of the Taiwan issue in broader US-China relations ahead of the talks.
