British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met US President Joe Biden at the White House in Washington to discuss the next steps in supporting Ukraine, with a key focus on whether to permit the use of Western missiles to strike targets within Russia.
This meeting comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy continues to press for greater military support from Western allies, specifically requesting the use of long-range missiles such as the US ATACMS and British Storm Shadows.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly condemned the idea, warning that allowing Ukraine to use Western-made long-range missiles against Russian territory would represent a direct escalation of Western involvement in the conflict. Putin suggested that such a decision would fundamentally alter the nature of the war.
The talks between Starmer and Biden come on the heels of a fact-finding mission to Kyiv by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy. During their visit, Blinken and Lammy reaffirmed their support for Ukraine but did not make any specific commitments regarding the use of missiles.
