A 29-year-old woman from Jhansi’s Barua Sagar area lost her life after falling prey to an online job scam that stripped her of her savings and pushed her into despair.
The woman, identified as Bhawna Pal, had gone missing earlier in the week. Her family launched a search after she failed to return home from what was believed to be a routine temple visit. Days later, her body was discovered floating in the Betwa River, ending the family’s desperate wait with tragedy.
According to investigators, Bhawna had been seeking ways to support her family financially and had responded to an online advertisement promising work-from-home packaging jobs for a reputed pencil company. Enticed by the offer, she transferred nearly Rs 35,000 as a registration and security fee, money she had borrowed from relatives. Soon after, the individuals she had spoken to vanished, their contacts switched off, and the company’s website taken down.
Police believe that the realisation of being cheated left Bhawna deeply distressed. With no response from the fraudsters and mounting financial pressure, she is suspected to have taken her own life.
Bhawna, who married in 2023, leaves behind her husband, Sher Singh, and their 14-month-old son. Her body was handed over to her family after the post-mortem on Saturday.
