Despite expectations of monsoon rains, Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad have seen minimal rainfall in late June 2025, leaving residents grappling with heat and humidity.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this to a delayed monsoon onset and specific atmospheric conditions.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a thick cloud cover hovered over Delhi-NCR on Wednesday, accompanied by high humidity levels. Yet, “there is no forecast of any major rainfall,” officials noted.
Why the Delay?
- Monsoon Delay: The southwest monsoon, expected to arrive in Delhi-NCR by June 27, has not yet fully arrived as of June 28. IMD notes that conditions are becoming favourable for monsoon advancement, but a weak monsoon flow and insufficient moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal have stalled progress in Northwest India, including Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad
- Atmospheric Conditions: A western disturbance (WD) trough is moving east, but it’s not yet inducing enough instability to trigger widespread rain. Unlike other regions (e.g., Kerala, Odisha), where heavy rainfall is reported, Delhi-NCR lacks the necessary low-pressure systems or cyclonic circulations to drive consistent showers.
- Recent Weather: While light rain occurred in parts of Noida and Ghaziabad on June 24, it was patchy and insufficient to break the heatwave. IMD’s June 26 forecast reported cloudy skies and temperatures around 32–33°C in Delhi-NCR, with humidity at 70–78%, but no significant rainfall.
When Will It Change?
The IMD says this blocking weather pattern may shift in the next three to four days. As the seasonal trough moves northwards and the anticyclonic circulation weakens, conditions may finally allow the monsoon to advance into Delhi and surrounding regions.
Typically, the monsoon arrives in Delhi around 30 June. In past years, the arrival dates were:
