In a groundbreaking decision, the All England Club has announced that Wimbledon, the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament, will eliminate human line judges in favor of AI-driven technology from 2025 onwards. The move marks a significant shift from tradition, with the tournament embracing innovation to enhance accuracy and reduce errors in officiating.
Wimbledon has long been known for its rich history and adherence to tradition. However, the introduction of AI technology, which will replace the 300 line judges who have previously overseen matches, is seen as a step toward modernizing the tournament. The role of the line judges, who determine whether a ball is ‘in’ or ‘out’ of court boundaries, will now be handled by an advanced AI system.
The technology was thoroughly tested during the 2024 edition of Wimbledon, and organizers have ensured that the system is a more refined version of what has been used in other tournaments. Speaking on the decision, Sally Bolton, Chief Executive of the All England Club, emphasized the need for precision.
While the decision has sparked debates among traditionalists who cherish the human element of officiating, Bolton reassured the public that the move is a necessary balance between “tradition and innovation.”
She also expressed gratitude to the line judges who have served Wimbledon for decades. “Line umpires have played a central role in our officiating set-up at the championships for many decades. We recognize their valuable contribution and thank them for their commitment and service,” Bolton added.
With Wimbledon joining the technological wave, the French Open will now be the only Grand Slam tournament that continues to use human line judges. Both the Australian Open and U.S. Open have already replaced line judges with electronic systems, leaving only chair umpires on court.
