Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit the United States from September 23 to 25 for a White House meeting with US President Donald Trump, but will skip the United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to reports citing people familiar with his itinerary.
Xi is expected to arrive on September 23, hold a full day of meetings with Trump at the White House on September 24 and leave the US on September 25. The visit would be his first to the United States in 11 years.
The UN General Assembly’s high-level week begins on September 22, but Xi is not expected to travel to New York or address the gathering.
His last in-person UN General Assembly appearance was in 2015, while he addressed the assembly virtually in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Trump-Xi meeting is expected to focus on key US-China issues, including trade, Taiwan and artificial intelligence, along with developments involving Iran and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The White House has confirmed the September 24 meeting but has not commented on Xi’s other US activities.
