When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy walked into his bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, it wasn’t global politics that sparked the first exchange—it was his suit.
“First of all, President Zelensky, you look fabulous in that suit,” remarked a reporter known for his sharp takes. The compliment carried an extra layer of irony: The same reporter had publicly criticised Zelenskyy back in February for showing up at the White House without a suit.
Trump, amused by the full-circle moment, quickly chimed in, “I said the same thing.”
Zelenskyy, never one to miss a beat, recognised the reporter immediately. With a sly smile, he fired back, “And you’re in the same suit.” The room broke into laughter. The reporter, perhaps a little sheepish, told the Ukrainian leader that he had since “apologised” for his earlier criticism and repeated, “You look wonderful.”
This time, Zelenskyy arrived in a coordinated dark jacket and shirt, notably without a tie—his signature understated style intact. But beyond the banter, the conversation soon turned serious.
