Fact Check: Clip of ‘Astronaut’ Walking on Road Riddled With Potholes Is Not From UP, But Bengaluru

Date:

Following the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3, a video showing a man dressed as an astronaut walking on the road riddled with potholes is being circulated on social media, claiming that it is from Uttar Pradesh.

The post read, “Uttar Pradesh…Artist, dressed up as astronaut, ‘Moonwalks’ on potholes in Uttar Pradesh.”

Here’s the link to the above post.

Some users claim that the image is from Kanpur.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim, and found it to be false.

According to a report by The Print, dated September 4, 2019, the video is from Bengaluru, and the man in the video is artist Baadal Nanjundaswamy.

According to The News Minute report, street artist Baadal Nanjundaswamy suited up as an astronaut and ‘moonwalked’ on pothole-riddled Tunganagar Main Road in Bengaluru. The same was reported by India Today and The Indian Express in 2019.

Baadal has shared the video on his Twitter account, dated September 2, 2019, tagging the Commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

On September 3, 2019, Baadal shared another video stating that quick and prompt action was taken by BBMP and the road was fixed.

Thus, it is clear that the viral video is quite old, and from Bengaluru. And its claims are fabricated.
