Fact Check: Old Video Of People Offering Namaz During Syria Earthquake Falsely Linked To Recent Morocco Tragedy

Date:

A video of people praying in an indoor place is widely circulated on social media claiming that people were offering namaz during the earthquake in Morocco.

The post reads: “Morocco Earthquake…The most terrifying moment during earthquake.”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

Putting the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, the NM team identified the same video uploaded on YouTube, dated February 26, 2023. As per its title, it was taken in Al-Dana, a town in northern Syria. The Google translation of the title reads: “Watched – The stability of worshipers during an earthquake in the city of Dana, northern countryside of Idlib.”

Other media reports have also carried the same video, mentioning that it is the security footage inside Al-Farouq Mosque in the town of Al-Dana in the Idlib countryside during a 6.4-magnitude in Syria.

The same video had also been uploaded on the verified YouTube channel of AlJazeera Arabic on February 26, 2023.

Thus, it is clear that the viral video is not from Morocco.
