“I don’t think everything should be judged on an isolated incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe for this (incident). Such accidents happen all over the world. It is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident.”
Ganguly had told reporters during an event at the Biswa-Bangla Convention Centre.
After making this statement, for which the former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly received a backlash on social media, the former BCCI president was surprised at how his comments on the Kolkata rape case have been misinterpreted.

He expressed deep concern over the incident and reiterated his stance against such crimes. He emphasised that the crime was a “terrible” event and assured the public that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the police worked diligently to solve the case.
The left-handed batsman, on 19 August, took a U-turn and changed his social media profile photo to black by showing his support and demanding justice for a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata who was brutally raped and murdered.
