At least eight people, including four children, were injured in a shooting during a family barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island on the night of July 4.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), officers responded to reports of gunfire at around 10:35 p.m. on Saturday (local time). Police said an unidentified man dressed in black and wearing a black ski mask approached the gathering and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
A 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest, while the remaining seven victims are reported to be in stable condition.
Among those injured were four children aged between six and 14. Police said a six-year-old was shot in the stomach, a seven-year-old boy suffered gunshot wounds to both legs, a 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg, and a 14-year-old boy was struck in the thigh.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said there was no indication of any argument or altercation before the shooting. Investigators are examining whether the attack is linked to a gang-related homicide that occurred on the same block earlier this week.
Police recovered a firearm from the scene, but no arrests had been made at the time of the announcement. The investigation remains ongoing.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani condemned the attack, saying there was “no place for this kind of violence” in the city.
“We will not tolerate it and we will fight it with every tool at our disposal. As we mourn alongside those whose loved ones have been hurt, let us also recommit ourselves to the work of building a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is joyful,” the mayor said.
