FBI Director Kash Patel is set to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, where Democrats are expected to question him over his leadership, taxpayer-funded travel and claims of possible arrests linked to the 2020 election.
Republican lawmakers are likely to focus on investigations into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Committee Chairman Senator Chuck Grassley has described the issue as a major priority.
Patel may also face questions about the sudden resignation of Joe DiGenova, who was leading an investigation involving several of former President Donald Trump’s political opponents and claims of a criminal conspiracy.
This will be Patel’s first Senate appearance since May, when Democrats questioned reports alleging that excessive drinking had affected his ability to lead the FBI. Patel denied the claims and defended his record.
He has also faced scrutiny over his use of a government plane, luxury vehicles and other taxpayer-funded resources. Separately, critics have raised concerns over the FBI’s cooperation with China and Russia on transnational crime.
Patel could also be questioned about the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and recently released messages involving his response to social media criticism.
