An Indian-origin doctoral student at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), was found dead after he went missing during a solo hiking trip in California’s Big Pine Lakes area, authorities confirmed.
Vikram Mubayi, a PhD student in UCSB’s Department of Chemical Engineering, was reported missing after failing to return from the hike as planned. His body was recovered in Inyo National Forest on the evening of August 3 following an extensive search by the Inyo County Search and Rescue team and the California Highway Patrol, according to the Daily Nexus, UCSB’s student newspaper.
According to reports, Mubayi last contacted his family around 8:30 p.m. on August 1, sharing his GPS coordinates while hiking. When he did not return to his campsite or respond to further messages, his family alerted authorities, prompting a large-scale search operation.
Officials have not disclosed the cause of death, and investigators have not indicated any signs of foul play. The incident remains under investigation.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi was described by his family as a “fairly experienced hiker” in a Reddit post seeking information during the search. His personal biography on the website of Illini 4000, a student-led nonprofit organisation, reflected his passion for the outdoors, sports, and endurance activities.
“My mother got me into hiking and tennis pretty much as soon as I learned how to walk,” Mubayi wrote in the biography, which also highlighted his experience as a cyclist.
Before joining UCSB, Mubayi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2022. During his undergraduate years, he worked as a research assistant at the Burke Laboratory and served as a teaching assistant.
At UCSB, Mubayi’s research focused on using bacteria and other biological processes to break down plant waste and plastics, aiming to develop sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based materials, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
