Massive July 4 Fireworks Trigger Sharp Air Quality Decline Across Washington

Date:

Washington’s record-breaking Independence Day fireworks display has led to a sharp deterioration in air quality across the metropolitan area, prompting local authorities to issue health warnings as pollution levels surged on Sunday.

According to the US National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory has been issued for Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm (local time), with heat index values expected to reach up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

The District is also under an Extreme Heat Alert through 8 am on Monday, with authorities warning that daytime temperatures could feel at or above 105 degrees Fahrenheit, while nighttime conditions are expected to remain warm, with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, offering little relief.

According to air quality monitoring data, several PM 2.5 pollution hotspots emerged across the region, with the highest concentrations recorded near Capitol Hill and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The spike followed Saturday night’s 250th Independence Day celebrations, during which the National Park Service staged what was billed as the largest fireworks display in history. The nearly 40-minute spectacle saw around 860,000 pyrotechnic shells launched from barges along the Potomac River, far surpassing last year’s 10-minute display featuring about 7,000 shells.

In response to the worsening conditions, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments issued a Code Purple air quality alert for the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia.

The advisory warned that elevated pollution levels could affect the general public, while children, older adults and people with asthma or other respiratory illnesses face a greater risk of health complications.

Authorities also urged residents to limit prolonged outdoor activity as temperatures were expected to approach 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
