At least one person was killed and nine others were hospitalized following a shooting in the West Texas city of Midland on Friday, prompting a large-scale response from law enforcement agencies before the suspect was found dead.
According to local officials, police initially faced a standoff situation after responding to reports of gunfire on Friday morning. Officers arriving at the scene reportedly heard shots coming from inside a building, leading authorities to deploy SWAT teams and additional emergency personnel.
During a press briefing, officials confirmed there were 11 victims in total, including one fatality. Midland Memorial Hospital said it received nine injured victims, with four undergoing surgery. The remaining five patients were reported to be in stable condition.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong urged residents to avoid the area while emergency operations were underway, stating that public safety personnel were actively responding to the incident.
Authorities later announced that the active shooter situation had been resolved. In a statement posted on social media, Midland Police confirmed that the suspect was deceased and no longer posed a threat to the public.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the suspect or disclosed a possible motive for the shooting. Additional details regarding the victims have also not been made public.
Mayor Blong said she was not aware of any police officers being injured during the response.
