A tragic domestic dispute in the US state of Iowa turned deadly on Monday, leaving six people dead across multiple locations in the city of Muscatine. Authorities said the suspect, identified as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, allegedly carried out a series of shootings before taking his own life.
According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers responded to a shooting report at approximately 12:12 p.m. local time. Upon entering a residence, police discovered four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the shootings stemmed from a domestic-related dispute, with police stating that all four victims were believed to be family members of the suspect. Authorities have not yet released the identities or ages of the deceased.
Police said McFarland had fled the residence before officers arrived. A short time later, law enforcement personnel located him near the Riverfront Trail close to a pedestrian bridge. He was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite emergency medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As the investigation unfolded, officers discovered two additional victims at separate locations. One adult male was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a residence, while another adult male was located deceased at a local business.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies described the incident as a devastating blow to the community.
“Today I simply do not have the words, this act of evil and what it has done to our community,” Kies said during a press briefing.
The police chief confirmed that the suspect had a prior criminal record but did not provide further details. He also reassured residents that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the shootings and have urged anyone with relevant information to contact the Muscatine Police Department. The motive behind the incident remains under investigation.
