Washington DC: US President Donald Trump has endorsed former Fox News host Steve Hilton in the California governor race, backing him as a candidate capable of “turning around” the state.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump praised Hilton while sharply criticising current Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing his administration of mismanagement and rising crime. He said Hilton could improve conditions in California with federal support if elected.
“I have known and respected Steve Hilton, who is running for Governor of California, for many years,” Trump wrote. “He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great state has gone to hell. Gavin Newscum and the Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job.”
He added, “People are fleeing, crime is increasing, and taxes are the highest of any state in the country, maybe the world. Steve can turn it around before it is too late and, as president, I will help him to do so.”
Hilton is among several Republican contenders seeking to replace Newsom. He has positioned his campaign as nonpartisan, focusing on issues such as high taxes, housing challenges and governance.
An author and entrepreneur, Hilton is best known for hosting “The Next Revolution” on Fox News. Born in the United Kingdom to Hungarian parents, he previously served as director of strategy for former UK Prime Minister David Cameron before moving to the United States.
On the campaign trail, Hilton has emphasised the need for policy reforms and stronger leadership, saying California requires both “the right ideas” and consistent execution to address its challenges.
