Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that any country supplying military weapons to Iran would face a steep 50% tariff on all goods exported to the United States, hours after announcing a two-week ceasefire in the ongoing West Asia conflict.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the measure would be “effective immediately” with no “exclusions or exemptions.” “A Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately. There will be no exclusions or exemptions!” he wrote.
The warning comes amid a temporary pause in hostilities, which Trump described as a “double-sided ceasefire,” aimed at facilitating negotiations for a broader peace agreement between Washington and Tehran.
Trump said Iran has agreed to halt its uranium enrichment programme as part of the ongoing discussions, while talks are also underway on tariff and sanctions relief.
In another post, he stated that the United States would “work closely” with Iran following what he termed a “very productive Regime Change,” adding that several elements of a wider agreement have already been finalized.
“The United States will work closely with Iran… There will be no enrichment of Uranium, and the United States will… remove all of the deeply buried Nuclear ‘Dust’… We are, and will be, talking Tariff and Sanctions relief with Iran. Many of the 15 points have already been agreed to,” Trump said.
Earlier, Trump announced the suspension of the US “bombing and attack” campaign for two weeks, citing progress in negotiations and a 10-point proposal from Iran that he described as a “workable basis” for a permanent deal.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan… and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” he said.
He added that most key points of contention between the two sides have already been resolved, and the ceasefire period would allow time to finalise a long-term agreement.
“Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to… a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalised and consummated,” Trump said, expressing confidence that a broader peace deal in the region was within reach.
