US, India Announce Over $2 Million In Grants For Joint AI And Quantum Research Projects

Date:

New Delhi: In a significant boost to technological collaboration, the United States and India have announced grants exceeding USD 2 million for 17 joint research projects focused on advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum technologies. The grants, aimed at fostering innovation for social good, will support initiatives tackling critical societal challenges, including AI-assisted early cancer detection and breakthroughs in quantum computing.

The announcement was made during an event hosted by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti and Seth Center, Acting Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technologies, alongside India’s Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh. According to a statement from the US Embassy, the projects will receive close to USD 120,000 each, with 11 focusing on AI and 6 on quantum technologies.

This initiative is part of the broader US-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), which aims to deepen cooperation between the two nations in frontier technologies. The iCET initiative has recently seen key developments, including the second Quantum Coordination Mechanism meeting held in Washington.

In addition to the AI and quantum research grants, the two countries announced a new USD 1 million US-India Science & Technology Endowment Fund (USISTEF) grant. This fund will support joint research in advanced materials and critical minerals, aiming to strengthen partnerships between US and Indian researchers across universities, national labs, and the private sector.

US Ambassador Eric Garcetti, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “I was honored to join Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and Dr. Seth Center to celebrate US and Indian innovators working at the cutting edge of AI and quantum technology. The US-India Science & Technology Endowment Fund is fueling partnerships to develop and commercialize critical and emerging technology as we build a brighter tomorrow.”

Garcetti emphasized the strong relationship between the two nations, highlighting that the technological collaboration between India and the US reflects shared values and aspirations. “As I often say, the Indian dream is the flip side of the American dream, and vice versa, and we really like each other,” he said.

Seth Center, praising the researchers receiving the grants, remarked on the importance of US-India collaboration in shaping the future of critical technologies. “Partnership between the United States and India is key to shaping the future of these and other emerging technologies so we collectively remain at the leading edge of innovation. We must ensure that they are developed and used with respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and support sustainable development around the world,” he stated.

The collaboration under iCET highlights the growing bilateral efforts in technological innovation, research, and development. With both nations at the forefront of the AI and quantum revolutions, these initiatives aim to ensure that new technologies serve as a force for good while also addressing global challenges.
