Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has endorsed US President Donald Trump’s maritime initiative “Project Freedom,” aimed at ensuring safe passage for vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.
Graham criticised Iran’s approach to negotiations, saying Tehran was “playing games” and its latest proposal to end the conflict was “absurd.” He stressed the need to secure freedom of navigation, warning that the US may have to respond forcefully if threats to global shipping persist.
The backing comes as Washington shifts focus toward safeguarding maritime routes after stalled diplomatic efforts with Iran.
Trump earlier said multiple countries had sought US assistance to guide their ships safely out of the Strait, describing the initiative as a “humanitarian gesture.” He added that American forces would escort vessels through the restricted waters, warning that any interference would be dealt with firmly.
The move coincides with ongoing but uncertain talks between the US and Iran, with both sides yet to agree on key issues, including ceasefire terms and sanctions relief.
