Washington: The US Supreme Court has for a second time refused to hear President Donald Trump’s request to overturn a federal civil jury verdict holding him liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E Jean Carroll.
The court had rejected an earlier appeal in June and gave no explanation for its latest decision, which was included in Monday’s order list.
Trump has denied the allegations and argued that the trial judge wrongly allowed evidence that influenced the jury. He paid Carroll more than $5 million in damages in July over her claim of sexual assault in the 1990s and subsequent defamation.
Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, welcomed the decision, saying: “We are pleased that the United States Supreme Court has declined again to hear this case.”
She added: “As a result, the jury’s unanimous verdict that Donald Trump sexually assaulted and then defamed E. Jean Carroll is now final and cannot be challenged in any court.”
Trump is also challenging a separate $83.3 million defamation verdict involving Carroll
