Cairo: At least 16 people were killed and 28 injured after a passenger bus overturned on the Dahab-Nuweiba road in Egypt’s South Sinai governorate on Wednesday, the country’s Health Ministry said.
Emergency teams rushed to the crash site, with 20 ambulances deployed to provide first aid and transport the injured to hospitals. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the accident.
Jordanian state media reported that 10 Jordanians were among those killed. Jordan’s official Al-Mamlaka channel said the bus was carrying 43 people, including 22 Jordanians.
The crash occurred between the popular Red Sea tourist towns of Dahab and Nuweiba, an area known for its marine biodiversity, natural landscapes and mountain hiking trails.
Deadly road accidents are common in Egypt and are frequently attributed to reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance and uneven enforcement of traffic laws. State statistics showed that nearly 6,000 people died in road accidents across the country in 2025.
The latest crash follows several fatal road accidents in Egypt.
Last month, at least 18 people, many of them teenagers, were killed when vehicles carrying agricultural day labourers crashed in northern Egypt.
Another recent accident in northeastern Ismailia reportedly killed 18 people and injured 30.
